Everything You Need to Know About The 2016 Guam Ko’Ko’ Road Races : : Costume Contests, Kids Fun Run, Live Entertainment, Treats, & Races for Runners Of All Levels

    Hey Guam Gals!

    Come Out For Ko’Ko’ Weekend!!

So, if you haven’t heard already, the annual Guam Ko’Ko’ Road Races & Guam Ko’Ko’ Kids Fun Run, along with festivities, is happening at the end of this month. This is absolutely the most fun, interactive, and exciting of all the runs that happen on Guam and it’s quite famous throughout the region.

I was recently invited to the 2016 Ko’Ko’ Road Races press conference where I received all the details for the upcoming event. I was completely blown away by the over the top decor, thematic music, palpable excitement in the air, spectacular food, and attention to detail put into the evening. If the press event was any indication of what the actual race and festival weekend will be like, I absolutely cannot miss it and I don’t think you’ll want to either!

Guam Ko'Ko Road Races & Kids Fun Run

This annual event is known for offering a little bit of something for the entire family. If you’ve been hesitant about attending local events because of not knowing anyone or what to expect once there, this is the perfect one to get your feet wet and I’ve got every bit of info you’ll need to prep for the weekend.

First, everyone is encouraged to come in a costume. Feel free to be as expressive as possible, but don’t let not having a costume keep you home. Runners will be awarded cash prizes for most original, best superhero, and scariest costumes, courtesy of Loconut Entertainment.

For those planning to run, there are 4 different races to choose from and registration closes on October 25th. Your family can actually participate in two events, since the kid’s run will happen a day before the adult races. Here are the races:

    1. Kids Fun Run
    2. 10K Run/Walk
    3. Ekiden 4-person Relay
    4. Half Marathon

    Volunteer and Win Prizes!

2016 Ko'Ko' Race Aid Station Contest

For those not wishing to run, there is a special opportunity for you and a group of friends to volunteer during the event and win prizes. Click here to read more.

    Ko’Ko’ Festivities

In addition to each of the races, Joseph Flores Park (Ypao Beach) will be full of live entertainment, face painting, vendors selling goods, performances and so much more! Even if you decide to just stroll through the area with kids in stroller, you’ll have a blast. Stay for the end of the races and attend the FREE Post Race Monster Bash!

For adult runners, the water stations along the route are going to be particularly fun and unusual. There will be a live DJ at each station pumping out fist bumping tunes and a rowdy (and maybe even a bit spooky) group of volunteers to keep you entertained and laughing along the way.

If you’ll be flying solo with the kiddos that day, don’t worry, this is the perfect event for a mom to head out with young kiddos strapped in the stroller or as a group with a few of your other mama friends and their kids.

    10th Guam Ko’Ko’ Kids Run

    Guam Ko'Ko' Kids Run 2016

The first event happening on Saturday, October 29th is the Ko’Ko’ Kids Fun Run. There will be three separate races based on age:

    1. 1K Race for 4-6 year olds
    2. 2K Race for 7-9 year olds
    3. 3K Race for 10-12 year olds

Each participant will recieve a goodie-bag, Ko’Ko’ Fun Run commemorative t-shirt, and a medal to show off their accomplishment. If this is something your kiddo would be interested in, be sure to register ASAP. There are openings for just 300 registrants. You can register here.

Additional Details: During the Kids Fun Run parents are asked to run along the side of the course and not on the actual course. This is for the safety of the runners, who obviously, are much smaller than adults and a fall with an adult could result in greater injury.

    10K Run/Walk

If you don’t quite feel up to running or are a bit out of shape, don’t worry the 10K was incorporated this year especially for you! You can bring your kids along on the course, as long as they’re strapped in the stroller securely. This would be a perfect time to catch up with friends and chat while getting some exercise in. The kids will absolutely love all the action happening on the course and will surely rack up some goodies to take home.

Additional Details: Show time for the 10K is 4am and will start at 5am. If you plan to walk or run this race with a stroller, be sure to trickle back behind all the runners without strollers. Once all the runners without strollers have gotten out the gate, feel free to run ahead as you like. This is for safety.

    Ekiden 4-person Relay

Each person a part of the relay will run 5 kilometers, 2.5 kilometers forward and 2.5 kilometers back. The course flows through the streets of Tumon and Tamuning, with cheering fans and volunteers along the way.

Additional Details: Show time is at 4 a.m. and go time is 5 a.m.

    Half Marathon

The Guam Ko’Ko’ 13.1 mile Half Marathon will take runners through the villages of Tumon, Tamuning, down through Hagatna, and on to the majestic seaside village of Anigua. The peak point on this course is JFK Hill, which will take place early on in the run and then again during the final couple of miles.

Additional Details: Line up for this race begins at 3 a.m. and go time is 4 a.m. This race is open to runners with strollers as well. Simply line up behind the runners without strollers and once the pack has cleared, feel free to run as you like.

    Tips For Attending the Event:

    • Park at K-Mart parking lot and walk down into Tumon
    • Pack a change of clothes and bathing suit
    • Bring hand sanitizer and full pack of wipes
    • Bring refillable water bottles with ice; one for each member of the family
