5 Things You Should Know About Postpartum Depression

Oh how crazy those first few weeks and months home with your new baby can be. They’re often unlike the angelic photos you saw in your pregnancy guide books, but instead involve more blood, sweat, and tears than you imagined.

What many women don’t know however is that some level of fatigue, unhappiness, and worry, referred to as “Baby Blues”, is very common and affects up to 80% of women. If you have a history of clinical depression, then your chances of experiencing actual Postpartum Depression are increased by 30%. When I share these facts with women they are often shocked. And I was too until I began to regularly sit at the bedside of freshly birthed new mothers and witness first hand how so many factors contribute to the roller coaster of emotions and overwhelm a new mother must navigate.

5 Top Secret Tips to Postpartum Success

In an interview I did with Mitera, I share my top 5 Secrets to Setting Yourself Up for Postpartum Success. These are crucial steps that I preach not only to my clients, but also my close friends and family members. I also share about a sacred practice called Lying-in, which I describe in more detail in my book Milk Boss 101. This practice is paramount to the (practically non-existent) low incidence of postpartum mood disorders in many “developing” nations and communities around the globe.

In a snapshot, here are the 5 Tips I share with Mitera, but be sure to check out the actual article for a more in-depth look at how you can create room for these in your postpartum journey:

    1. Set up a Meal Train
    2. Secure Postpartum Help
    3. Practice Lying-In
    4. Consult a Lactation Professional
    5. Trust Yourself

If you’re currently pregnant or even considering conception, I highly encourage you to begin doing some research on the availability of postpartum support persons (aka postpartum doulas) in your area. These women are trained to help families prepare for and navigate the postpartum season with ease and confidence.

You can also pick up a copy of Milk Boss 101: The Modern Breastfeeding Journal & Guide, which provides you with a detailed method, called The 5-Step Tribe method, for creating your ideal journey through early motherhood.
